Summary

Saltwater. Zoanthids. The polyps look like small sea anemones. Symbiotic on a wide variety of sponges, including the Brown tube sponge Agelas conifera and the Dark volcano sponge Pseudaxinella zeai.

To be confused with

- Golden Zoanthid Parazoanthus swiftii

Characteristics

Size: 0,6 cm, max 0.7 cm.
Colour: Body and tentacles dark maroon, burgundy or purple. Tentacles may be somewhat translucent.
Shape: The oral disc of this symbiotic zoanthid is up to 0.6 cm in diameter and bears small tentacles.

Habitat environment and ecology

Inhabits coral reefs. An Atlantic species that are dark red to white and at times clear. They grow on volcano sponges and tube sponges. It is the most common zoanthid below 20 m.

BES-eilanden: St. Eustatius.
